Rouault’s Clowns find a new home

Congratulations to Paul B from Louisiana who found this work by Georges Rouault in our inventory via the internet and is having us
ship it to him. It is Number 11 from a limited edition of 250.

The Conversation: 2 Clowns

Georges Henri Rouault (27 May 1871 – 13 February 1958) was a French Fauvist and Expressionist painter, and printmaker. Rouault was born in Paris into a poor family, but with the encouragement of his mother, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the official art school of France. There he studied under Gustave Moreau and became his favorite student. Rouault’s earliest works show a symbolism in the use of colour that probably reflects Moreau’s influence. In 1907, Rouault commenced a series of paintings dedicated to courts, clowns and prostitutes. These paintings are interpreted as moral and social criticism. (Ibid. Wikipedia)

If you knew Cynthia as we do, you’d smile in recognition when you first saw this piece. Primarily oil on canvas with bits of other media mixed in, this painting is 20×24, and full of the same expressiveness that Cynthia possesses. Her series of faces are all loosely based on personalities from literature, religion and life as it happens to her. We have five such works, some still waiting to be framed, but all worthy of any serious art collection with an allegorical interest. SmartArtMarket presents Alice Buckner’s abstract expressionist paintings, being shown this season in the Connor Summers Gallery. Her work is colorful and energetic, and inspired by jazz and interesting people. This piece, “Conversation w/Robert Goodall” is a 10×14 combined watercolor/pastel pencil work on paper which came to life aboard an Amtrak train from NYC to Vermont.

The Connor Summers Gallery, and SmartArtMarket, is proud to be hosting some work by North Shore native, and current Dallas resident, Cynthia Chartier. Her mixed media presentations are, at times, both abstract and surreal. This piece, entitled “Hearts, Single” is 5×7 inches and framed in a bold flat black floater frame. Overall size is 7.5 x9.5 inches. It is part of a series of 18 such pieces Cynthia created in the last year. We have three of them. Stop in to see these and some other larger canvases of hers. We will be showing this work through the holidays, and have extended our hours for the remainder of the year to include being open on Sunday from Noon until 4:30 PM

Jim Mickellson just keeps on selling

Congratulations to IM of Plum Island, MA,
who recently purchased Jim Mickelson’s version of
the Rockport Motif #1. A truly important painting in
Jim’s development as a painter. We date this painting
to either the late 1950′s or early 60′s.
This painting depicts the motif before it became known
as Motif#1. There are elements of the painting that no long
exist, We sincerely hope that IM and her husband will enjoy
many years of living with this painting. It is truly representational
of Jim’s better work, and displays, in some ways, his developmental
period. Thanks, and best wishes to IM.
